Rafael Karlen is an Australian saxophonist, composer and arranger who has recently relocated to Switzerland. His music has been performed by small jazz groups, rock and pop ensembles, big bands through to chamber orchestras and string quartets. He has performed throughout Australia, and in Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Sweden.

Rafael’s approach blends jazz, classical, and contemporary influences, and in 2024, he released two albums that both had a strong focus on unpacking larger themes. Sinking Cities featured his extended work for choir, string orchestra and saxophone, and Eucalyptus Treeo explored histories and concepts of Australian National Parks in a jazz trio format.
Rafael holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Music from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
