Born in Canada and raised in South Africa, the now Perth/Boorloo based artist began recording music in 2020 amidst the start of COVID-19, inspired by the likes of Young Thug, Nujabes, Alicia Keys and Lime Cordiale. Oshua leverages the power of internet collaboration with releases underpinned by introspective lyrics, Hip-Hop rooted drums, confident vocal deliveries, and handpicked instrumentals which are used to reflect a genre-bending sound. Spending more time on the internet in his home studio, his ear for a wider range of sounds pricked which now forms the assortment of soundscapes we hear in his current work.
“Over the past three years I haven’t really been taking inspiration from singular artists, it’s more sub-genres and specific singles and specific songs”. A true by-product of this age of streaming – living in a world with greater accessibility to music – Oshua is a prime example of how creatives have adapted to a takeover in technology. “I started focusing on every internet community [in music] I could find (reddit, Instagram, discord) that’s where I met everyone I work with to this day.’’
Following Oshua’s debut, his Sophomore EP Float Music 1 released in June of 2024, which saw frequented collaborators and a feature from rising Atlanta star Destin Laurel, this EP brought with it yet another jump in quality, improvement in sound and even more tasteful visuals to accompany the music. The release led to him earning a spot on one of Australia’s biggest music festivals – Listen Out, where Oshua will be performing alongside global acts such as Tyla, 21 Savage, Lil Tjay, Teezo Touchdown and more. The rising artist is set to release his debut album Angel Heights later this year.
