Recap: Classical:NEXT 2026

An Australian delegation headed to Budapest for the annual Classical music event.

Last week Sounds Australia was in Budapest, Hungary for the Classical:NEXT conference and festival, with more than 15 Australians making the trip over.

The annual event connects the global classical and art music communities, with showcases, networking, panels and a three day trade fair. Sounds Australia, in partnership with the Australian Music Centre were proud to host the Australia stand at the trade fair, where a special “Meet The Australians” networking session was held on the Thursday afternoon. Support for this event was provided by the Australian Embassy in Hungary, with H.E. Ambassador Ian Biggs in attendance.

During the four day event, two Australians – Rae Howell and Claire Edwardes – gave “Project Pitches” to a room full of bookers and industry professionals. Five Australians took part in panels, including Sounds Australia’s own Larry Heath, who moderated the first ever Asia-Pacific meet up at the festival. And Australian “pyro-violinist” Sonja Schebeck also performed in the official showcase programme, with Chloé Charody Creations’ “LIMBO Sonata” enjoying a rare standing ovation at its conclusion.

Sounds Australia also co-hosted the annual Country Connections networking event, which saw our delegation join 50 delegates from around the world for an afternoon of speed networking.
