ROUND 1 RECIPIENTS
The first round of Sounds Australia’s Export Stimulus (SAES) package has been awarded to a diverse cross section of local music industry made up of artists, producers, songwriters, composers, managers and crew. The funds will support a broad range of international activity encompassing touring, song writing, producing, sound design and tour/technical support.
Judged by an external panel of highly experienced assessors – Cameron Adams, Leanne de Souza, Paul Mason, Sam Cook and Sosefina Fuamoli – priority was always to be given for activity undertaken by established talent re-entering the international music market.
31 applicants were collectively awarded AUD$413,190.72.
Alessandro Nicoli
Alex is a Stage Manager and Guitar Technician based out of Melbourne, Australia and has worked with the likes of Gojira, Lana Del Rey, Angus & Julia Stone and Tash Sultana.
This funding will help Alex with all the additional touring cost associated with his work on French Band Gojira’s world tour for 2021-2022.
Alice Ivy
Alice Ivy will travel to Los Angeles to continue writing and recording her third studio-album.
Brian Ritchie
The SAES funding support Violent Femmes’ 40th Anniversary USA Tour. This takes the band on a 6 week, 30 day tour throughout most regions of the USA. Each show is for between 1000 and 5000 people. We are touring in support of two reissues on the Concord Label, Why Do Birds Sing? and Add It Up. Although the Femmes started in the States, two of the performers currently reside in Tasmania and have been unable to leave the country to tour, nor have the USA members been allowed into Australia. The support from SAES helps relaunch Violent Femmes as a touring act at a crucial time.
Cosmo’s Midnight
Cosmo’s Midnight will be using the funds from this grant to support their US tour with Kiwi producer BAYNK. This tour will be an unmissable opportunity for Cosmo’s Midnight with substantial professional benefits expected, it will provide an opportunity for them to reconnect with their US fan base while also expanding their audience to new people by supporting BAYNK on his tour. A targeted marketing strategy will allow Cosmo’s Midnight to get the most out of their time in the US, in turn helping them promote their 3rd album which will be being released at the time.
Courtney Barnett
Courtney Barnett will play 29 shows and festivals across the USA in between November 2021 – March 2022 – specifically timed to maximise the release of her fourth studio album due for release in November 2021. These are Courtney’s biggest ever headline shows in the USA to date – including Radio City Music Hall in NYC, The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Toronto’s Massey Hall and multiple nights at Los Angeles’ iconic Ace Theatre.
DMA’S
The DMA’S are embarking to the United Kingdom to complete a long-awaited tour. Between mid-October to December 2021, this export activity will see the DMA’S engage with their fans over 23 dates across Scotland, England, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Recording sessions in the heart of London will complete the activity before the band’s return to Australian soil.
Flight Facilities
Flight Facilities return to North America for the first time since 2018, bringing a new live show full of fresh tracks and energy to hit the stage. The tour will see Flight Facilities take the stage alongside RÜFÜS DU SOL for three sold-out stadium shows in Los Angeles’ Banc of California Stadium, before joining the fellow Australians for stops through Texas, Arizona, Nevada and a visit to Mexico City for Corona Capital. The boys also plan to launch their long-awaited second album Forever in Los Angeles.
G Flip
SAES Funding will allow G Flip to write their second record and reconnect with previous collaborators to finish music that was started prior to the pandemic as well as explore US Publishing deals.
Good Morning
Good Morning will travel to North America to undertake a tour celebrating the release of Barnyard, their first album on US based label Polyvinyl, which is set to be released on October 22. The band will be playing headline shows and festivals across the US, Canada and Mexico.
Genesis Owusu
The SAES funding will enable Genesis to undertake his first US headline tour, bringing to life his critically acclaimed debut album, Smiling With No Teeth. It will also enable Genesis to meet with his US team, participate in writing sessions with other collaborators and attend important meetings with top music executives in a market that has shown incredible interest over the past year.
Harvey Sutherland
Harvey Sutherland will be undertaking promotional, production and songwriting activities in Los Angeles, including a music video shoot for a forthcoming single.
Hatchie
This funding will enable Hatchie to travel internationally ahead of the release of her highly anticipated sophomore album, which will be released in 2022. While based in Los Angeles for six months, Hatchie will conduct press and video shoots, meetings with her new label (Secretly Canadian), publisher (Hipgnosis Songs Fund) and management (Monster Artist Management) and on-ground promotional activity with press, radio and broadcast media. Hatchie will also tour North America, the United Kingdom and Europe over this period.
India Hooi
Australian audio engineer India Hooi has been selected to undertake the Audio/Video Fellowship at the renowned New World Symphony in Miami Beach, USA, for up to 3 years. India will work on recording, live mixing and post-production audio for the orchestra’s concerts and recording projects, while receiving mentorship and training to use the New World Center’s extensive audiovisual systems.
Jared Daly
With the support from SAES Jared will be able to undertake international travel over the next 12 months, allowing him to continue to practice his craft as a professional mix-engineer.
The ability to continue international touring work, with the support of the SAES programme will means his live sound engineering business has the first real opportunity to return to some form of regular work for nearly 18 months.
Julia Jacklin
This funding will be used to support the touring and visa costs for Julia Jacklin’s full band US tour in January/February 2022, including 11 shows supporting Courtney Barnett and 3 headline shows on the East Coast of the US.
Kitty Xiao
The Sounds Australia Export Stimulus (SAES) Program will support Kitty’s attendance at the upcoming 2021/2022 10th International Ensemble Modern Academy in Germany, and an Artist Residency in 2022 at the Chateau d’Orquevaux in France.
Every two years the International Ensemble Modern offers four to six composers the opportunity to work intensively with Ensemble Modern. The seminar includes two working phases: during a first try-out, composers can experiment with and develop their compositional ideas in conjunction with the musicians. In a second phase, the pieces are then thoroughly rehearsed and given their world premieres. Both of these phases are accompanied by acclaimed personalities from the world of music. Kitty’s new work will be premiered on March 5 2022 as part of the cresc… festival at Frankfurt Lab.
The Chateau d’Orquevaux Artist Residency creates an international environment for artists and writers to explore, contemplate and share ideas.
Kitty’s final composition will contribute to The Chateau d’Orquevaux Art Collection.
Look Out Kid
Look Out Kid (LOK) is a leading artist management company – representing the careers of Australian artists Courtney Barnett, Sarah Blasko, Briggs, Middle Kids and international artists Faye Webster (USA), Beverly Glenn-Copeland (Canada) and more recently – Arooj Aftab (Pakistan/USA). This project will see LOK’s three senior staff head to Nth America in September to oversee and coordinate Faye Webster’s North American tour, the recording of a new album by Beverly Glenn-Copeland and meeting with LOK’s newest client – Arooj Aftab based in Brooklyn.
Luke Moller
With the support of the SAES Grant, Luke will be travelling to Nashville, TN to join Grammy award nominated Americana artist ‘Hayes Carll’ on his fall 2021 USA tour. Luke will be performing as part of Hayes Carll’s band on Fiddle, Mandolin and background vocals. The tour criss-crosses the USA from New York to Texas, performing over 30 shows.
Mansionair
The SAES Funding will be going towards supporting Mansionair’s upcoming tour and album promotion in the US.
Mark Benedicto
After the latest drop of their album Mercury that Mark worked on, he will be going back
into the studio with Dan Reynolds (Imagine Dragons) to work on their upcoming LP as well as
co-writing with other American label acts such as Why Don’t We, Clinton Kane, Kiiara, K.Flay,
Healy, Audrey Mika, Carlie Hanson and many more. Mark will also be paired up with renowned
songwriters including Kennedi (Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande), Pearl Lion (Dominic Fike), Micah
Premnath (Selena Gomez), Jorgen Odegard (Justin Bieber, Kygo, BLACKPINK).
Masked Wolf
The SAES funds will be utilised to cover expenses from the correct tour Masked Wolf is undertaking in the USA/Europe playing at SAGA fest Romania, Summerfest Milwaukee, Washington State Fair and Jimmy Kimmel to name a few. Having the ability to leave the country spend time in the studio with countless A list writers and producers and play to thousands of fans is a major stepping stone in helping further Masked Wolf’s growth as an artist.
Meg Mac
Meg Mac has been quietly working away and writing her new album these past 18 months. The SAES funding will be supporting opportunities that have come up to work with some incredible producers and creatives in LA
Middle Kids
Globally renowned Australian indie pop/rock Middle Kids are one of the first Australian bands to touch US soil since COVID hit and they are making up for lost time – delivering night after night of incredible live music to fans. Their North American tour is well underway – playing 22 shows across the USA this September and October 2021 in support of their critically acclaimed sophomore album ‘Today We’re The Greatest’.
Rachael Dease
Rachel will travel to Gothenburg in January 2022 to realise her original score for Here Not Here, a collaboration created by Maxine Doyle, internationally renowned for her large-scale, site specific creations with Punchdrunk and artist/designer Es Devlin whose sculptural installations have been shown in museums and galleries worldwide as well as theatre, opera and concert stages. Here Not Here is an epic two part, two hour labyrinthian journey of memory, mirrors and demons through the underbelly of the Götenborg Opera House, performed by the acclaimed Götenborg Dance Company
Rai Thistlethwayte
SAES funding will contribute to upcoming work in the USA and Europe covering flight costs to leave and return to Australia, as well as internal logistics, those being: filmed and recorded sessions in October with long-time collaborators LA electro/jazz/funk crossover group KNOWER, meetings with Joe Satriani’s crew ahead of next year’s touring work/album release (Rai has played keyboards on his upcoming album and will be playing keyboards in his live touring band), a 3 day recording session in Staten Island with Israeli born, NY based virtuoso guitarist Oz Noy, and also a multi theatre tour of the Netherlands with Louis Cole alongside the esteemed Metropole Orkest, in the first half of November 2021.
SHOUSE
SHOUSE’s breakout worldwide hit “Love Tonight” has become one of Australia’s most significant music exports of 2021. A Top 10 hit in France, Germany and across Europe, over 8 million Shazams and counting, “Love Tonight” has become one of those rare good-news stories to emerge during the global pandemic. SHOUSE now has the opportunity to travel to Europe to perform and execute live promotional activities in support of the record with assistance via the SAES grant. These opportunities will help to define this independent act as a legitimate Australian music export business for the foreseeable future.
Stand Atlantic
The SAES Grant is going to support Stand Atlantic’s 2022 planned worldwide touring campaign in support of their pandemic-released second album and follow up singles. The band was one of Australia’s hottest artists before and during the pandemic and the grant will ensure Australian music will continue to be on the global stage and exported worldwide post-pandemic.
Tame Impala
Tame Impala will return to North America and Mexico for a series of headlining festival appearances and arena shows to promote the release of Tame Impala’s 4th studio album ‘The Slow Rush’. The dates include headline appearances at Outside Lands and Corona Capital festivals and 2 nights at the Hollywood Bowl.
The Avalanches
Melbourne based sampologists, The Avalanches will use their funding from the Sounds Australia Export Stimulus (SAES) Program to help complete a North American tour, in support of their much-loved and critically acclaimed third album, We Will Always Love You. Taking place across 14 shows and spanning Canada and the United States, the tour will reconnect the group with old fans and introduce new ones to their exuberant and life-affirming live show.
The Goon Sax
The SAES funding will contribute towards The Goon Sax’s UK/Europe tour starting in January 2022. Doing a run of headline shows to promote the release of their new album Mirror II via international label Matador Records, including a batch of dates as part of Independent Venue Week in the UK. Then they will be playing more shows through February and March in UK/Europe.
Tommy Trash
Tommy Trash will return to the US for his first tour in 3 years in early 2022 with the help of the SAES. Tommy is a dance music phenomenon and GRAMMY-nominated artist. From his early beginnings at the renowned Ministry of Sound to his timely coalescing with Swedish House Mafia’s Sebastian Ingrosso for the legendary Reload, the dance music pioneer has become one of the genre’s biggest success stories. The last year has seen collaborations with Peking Duk, Yolanda be Cool and Kiesza, and his upcoming 15 date US tour heralds a return to the global superstar DJ that he is.
