ROUND 2 RECIPIENTS
The second round of Sounds Australia’s Export Stimulus (SAES) package has been awarded to a diverse cross section of local music industry made up of artists, producers, songwriters, composers, managers and crew. The funds will support a broad range of international activity encompassing touring, song writing, producing, sound design and tour/technical support.
Judged by an external panel of highly experienced assessors – Cameron Adams, Leanne de Souza, Paul Mason, Sam Cook and Sosefina Fuamoli – priority was always to be given for activity undertaken by established talent re-entering the international music market.
32 applicants were collectively awarded AU$434,878.35
18YOMAN
This funding will go towards acquiring a US VISA, as well as a trip to the Los Angeles to write with collaborators Take A Daytrip, Rico Nasty, Lil Nas X and others.
Amyl And The Sniffers
Amyl and the Sniffers will embark on a 4-week US tour in April/May 2022 to promote their globally acclaimed album Comfort To Me, released in September 2021. The tour will include performances at Coachella 2022, an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers and sold out dates across North America.
Budjerah
SAES will support Budjerah’s string of headline shows across Europe and the UK. Budjerah was also offered the main support for shows on Vance Joy’s ’‘The Long Way Home’ tour in London, Nashville, NYC, Vancouver and Toronto which will see him play in front of thousands every night and further build his own international fanbase. While in the US, Budjerah will also complete 3 headline shows.
CAMP COPE
CAMP COPE have extensive touring planned for 2022 and beyond in support of forthcoming album Running with the Hurricane. This grant will go toward updated VISAS, and travel expenses needed to fulfil commitments in the US and UK/Europe – both essential territories for the band, helping to promote themselves overseas and in turn, at home in Australia.
Daniel Stork
Dan is a Tour Manager and Front of House engineer based out of Brisbane, Australia, and has worked with the likes of Deafheaven, Nothing, Hockey Dad, Smith Street Band and Dune Rats.
This funding will help Dan with the additional touring costs associated with his international work on Deafheaven’s Infinite Granite international touring schedule over the coming years.
Dom Dolla
Dom Dolla is returning to North America & Europe for his biggest international tour yet. Dom will be away for the majority of the year with tour dates including residencies in Las Vegas, Ibiza as well as major festival appearances at Coachella, Creamfields and Tomorrowland.
Gordi
Gordi will be embarking on a month-long tour throughout UK and Europe supporting acclaimed indie artist The Tallest Man On Earth. The tour is Gordi’s first overseas run of shows since her cancelled run of dates with Of Monsters And Men and Bon Iver in 2020, in support of her ARIA-nominated second album Our Two Skins.
Hayden James
The SAES Grant will help financially support Hayden James’ forthcoming North American live headline tour off the back of the release his sophomore album “Lifted” out this April. Album release commitments in the US include a Los Angeles launch party, PR & radio interviews and appearances, followed by a performance at the iconic Coachella Music & Arts Festival. Live rehearsals with crew to take place before kicking off Hayden’s largest North American live tour to date from May through June in over twenty markets.
Hiatus Kaiyote
Hiatus Kaiyote head to US in March, April to tour their Grammy Nominated 3rd album Mood Valiant.
Playing some of their biggest concerts to date with two sold-out shows at Brooklyn Steel on March 11th and 13th, a show in Oakland at The Fox Theatre March 17th, a slot at LA’s Smokin Grooves Festival on March 19th, followed by a Denver date on April 5th at The Ogden Theatre.
Mood Valiant released on Brainfeeder / Ninjatune marks their 3rd Grammy Nomination and first in an album category for ‘Best Progressive RnB Album’. The band will attend the awards in Las Vegas on April 3rd 2022.
Holiday Sidewinder
Holiday Sidewinder will play 17 shows across the United Kingdom supporting iconic British pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor on her Kitchen Disco Tour throughout March 2022. These shows will coincide with the launch of Holiday Sidewinder’s Web3 crowdfund campaign for her next album The Last Resort, set for release in 2022. She will be playing venues such as Birmingham Symphony Hall, Poole Lighthouse, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham Royal Concert Hall and London’s famous Palladium.
John Butler
John Butler will undergo a solo tour of Europe in late April, May and June for 6 weeks. This will be the third time this tour has been scheduled, originally being planned and confirmed for 2020. The tour is comprised of 29 shows throughout Europe – 18 headline shows throughout regional and metro France, 3 shows in Italy, 3 shows in Switzerland and shows in Belgium, Luxembourg, Amsterdam and London.
Kaurna Cronin
Kaurna Cronin is embarking on a 40 date European Tour in June/July/August 2022 in support of his forthcoming album Harsh Beauty out in June 2022. This export activity will see Kaurna Cronin re-engage with his already established fan bases in Germany, Sweden, Estonia and Poland plus develop new audiences with concerts and festivals throughout Denmark, Finland and Lithuania.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
King Gizzard will be performing at Coachella, among a string of headline shows. Support acts for these shows include fellow Aussies Mildlife, The Chats and Amyl and the Sniffers.
Nat Dunn
After 2 years working remotely from Australia, Nat Dunn will reconnect in the studio with the incredible creatives and artists she has worked with to date. Aside from studio sessions this trip will allow Nat to connect with record labels, managers, publishers and other writers/ producers and artists for the planning of future collaborations.
Native Tongue Music Publishing
Australian based songwriters Tim Tan, Ciara Muscat and Aston will travel to Tokyo and Seoul to continue writing with their Japanese and Korean counterparts, building on the significant successes they have achieved in those markets during Covid and the closed borders. Funding will be used to support the additional costs for visas, quarantine requirements, freight, and insurance.
Our Golden Friend
Our Golden Friend is a Melbourne based record label and Management Collective. In May Our Golden Friend will travel to the US and UK to undertake meetings with key industry figures and provide additional support to management artists as they tour, write and record.
Parkway Drive
Parkway Drive will tour the US and Canada in May / June 2022. The tour was already postponed in 2020, then cancelled in 2021, each time incurring financial losses. This tour will be the first for Parkway in the territory for 3 years and an important step in the future of the band. The tour comprises of 22 shows, including 3 festival appearances.
Rhia
Rhia is confirmed for an extensive list of shows and dates with Lettuce, Break Science, Khalid and more. Venues and festivals include Afropunk, The Brooklyn Bowl, Sunset Sound, NAMM and other renowned locations across the US with anticipated audiences of up to 20,000. Rhia will also be writing and producing with high profile artists including Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder and more.
Ruel
With the finish line for his debut album completion in sight, Ruel will use SAES support to return to the US and undertake a number of final writing and recording sessions in Los Angeles and New York with his executive producer M-Phazes.
SAES backing will also assist Ruel to bring his band to join him in the US, UK and Ireland for a very limited selection of headline shows, allowing him to reignite his international presence.
Sampa The Great
Following the success of her 4 time ARIA award winning debut album The Return, Sampa The Great was set to tour North America in early 2020. With touring now back on, Sampa has added new dates and upped venue sizes, seeing her play the final show of the tour at Coachella. The SAES grant will assist with alleviating the added COVID compliance costs, as well as reducing the significant overheads travel North America brings, ultimately allowing new audiences to experience the thrilling and inspiring Sampa The Great live show.
Stella Donnelly
Stella will be reconnecting with her audiences supporting Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever. The tour will take Stella to new venues and expose her music to expanded audiences across Brighton, Oxford, Bristol, Cardiff, Northampton, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, London, Sheffield, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Dublin, Berlin, Oslo, Copenhagen, Paris, Brussels, Nijmegen and Amsterdam. At the conclusion of the RBCF tour, Stella and band will travel to Spain to perform at BBK Bilbao festival.
Sundowner
Sundowner Directors Simone Ubaldi and Andrew Parisi will make several international trips in 2022 to support artists on their management services roster (Amyl and The Sniffers, Grace Cummings, Nice Biscuit, Baby Cool, Civic) and continue to develop their international music export business. Sundowner will be present at key international events including SXSW, The Great Escape, Coachella and Glastonbury, as well as the Sniffers’ largest-ever headline show at London’s Brixton Academy.
Sunwrae
Rae Howell, director of Sunwrae, will be attending the Classical:NEXT Conference and EXPO in Germany in May 2022, to present a Project Pitch of Bee-Sharp Honeybee, followed by network meetings in Europe and London. Bee-Sharp Honeybee is a large-scale outdoor event, an immersive journey through the secret life of bees, featuring the Sunwrae String Orchestra, synchronised with live animated projections and a real-time stream of honeybees, filmed, amplified, and fed through the live performance.
Sycco
Sycco will use her SAES funding to support an international tour including dates across the UK and Europe, writing sessions with high profile collaborators and various promotional activities.
Tash Sultana
This funding will help freight the over 2 tonnes of gear required when touring internationally. It will also assist to mitigate some of the COVID contingency costs set up to ensure that the team is staying safe while out on the road.
The Amity Affliction
The SAES Grant is going to support The Amity Affliction’s 2022 planned USA touring campaign in support of their 7th full length album Everyone Loves You… Once You Leave Them which was released just prior to the pandemic. The band was previously set to depart on an extensive period of North American and European touring, and the SEAS grant will help to ensure the band are able to continue to demonstrate why they are so highly sought after in these markets.
The Chats
The Chats are pleased to announce several high profile, headline international tours for 2022. These tours will see the Queensland group play Coachella Festival (US) as well as multiple headline shows throughout the UK, Europe and North America. With the help of Sounds Australia, the goal for these tours is to grow the band from playing small clubs to headlining large theatres of 3,000 – 5,000 capacity. The Chats will be releasing a new album to support these upcoming tours, and with touring being the key vehicle for supporting new albums and driving incremental business, it will be instrumental in the groups overall plan to further grow their value and brand internationally.
The Church
This May, ARIA Hall of Famers The Church will return to the USA for the first time since 2019. The Church will play 11 shows across the south west, including two appearances at Los Angeles’ Cruel World festival alongside contemporaries including Devo, Blondie, Morrissey and more. This touring leg marks the beginning of a two year cycle of activity in the USA to support the release of the band’s 25th studio album.
The Teskey Brothers
This funding will support The Teskey Brothers returning to North America in 2022. The band will play their largest headlines shows in the territory yet and will play to audiences in Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Toronto and New York. This will support the VISA costs for the band and to take their essential local Australian crew on the tour.
Vance Joy
The SAES Stimulus grant will be used to help support Vance Joy’s return to North America for key shows in support of his latest single release. The funds will be used to help supplement the costs of visas, COVID costs, and rehearsals after 2.5 years of no touring.
William Barton
William Barton, Australia’s leading didgeridoo player and highly esteemed Composer, is performing with the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini in Parma on the 25th March 2022. The performance is part of the orchestra’s 2022 season, taking place at the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini, on what would have been Arturo Toscanini’s 155th birthday. Under the baton of conductor and fellow Australian Daniel Smith the performance will be a new orchestration of Barton’s original work Kalkadungu, arranged for Chamber Orchestra. With delays due to Covid 19, this highly anticipated performance is finally taking place after two years of planning and rescheduling.
Wolfmother
For the last seventeen years, Wolfmother has amassed a global fanbase, played to packed-house crowds and delivered show stealing sets at star-studded festivals. The band is set to embark on two long-awaited tours this year in the UK and Europe. They’ll play headline and festival shows during May and August to support the release of their sixth studio record Rock Out as well as participate in press opportunities, celebrating a much needed connection with Wolfmother fans.
