In her prolific but (so far) short career Carla Geneve has twice been crowned WAM’s Song of the Year, and swept seven WA Music Awards in three years. Newcastle post-punk quintet dust are fast cementing their status as one of the country’s most singular and essential bands. Urgent, mesmeric, and arresting both on and off the stage, the collective have wasted no time in ensuring that their music and message reaches as far as it possibly can.

Forming against the backdrop of COVID in May 2020, the group – comprising of vocalists and guitarists Gabriel Stove and Justin Teale, bassist Liam Smith, guitarist and saxophonist Adam Ridgway, and drummer Kye Cherry – gathered whenever they could to hone their craft, performing at every possible chance as they sharpened their sprawling yet intricate sound.

All the while, dust were hard at work behind the scenes, putting the finishing touches on their forthcoming debut EP, ‘et cetera, etc’ released in March 2023.

Offering a contemporary take on Australian post-punk, along with elements of experimental jazz and electronic music, dust have curated a sound that is as dark, introspective, and angular as it is powerful and progressive.

Elle Shimada is a violinist, producer, curator, DJ and multi-instrumentalist from Tokyo based in Melbourne.

A unique combination of thickly layered string lines making tender love to heavy new-jazz influenced beats creates an emotive, cinematic and other-worldly atmosphere while keeping the dance floor pulsing with visionary and edgy production.

A director to the multidisciplinary performance group CO-DREAMERS, Shimada fuses a choir section and choreography with kinetic succession of dance beats and abstract compositions to create an unforgettable live performance experience.

In 2022, Shimada released her debut album ‘HOME ? LOCATION’ on The Jazz Diaries. The self produced and performed work is introspective political commentary mixed with electronic music, Shimada journeys through spiritual jazz and drum’n’bass in search of a home beyond the geographical touring in Australia, UK, EU, USA and Indonesia with tenacious reception globally.

Emily Barker is an award-winning singer-songwriter, best known as the writer and performer of the theme to the hugely successful BBC crime drama ‘Wallander’ starring Kenneth Branagh.

Barker has announced a new album ‘Fragile as Humans’ – released May3, 2024 – her first since 2020’s ‘A Dark Murmuration of Words’, which garnered widespread acclaim on its release, Uncut calling it “…a kind of Australian equivalent of PJ Harvey’s Let England Shake”. and The Australian, in a 5* review, saying it’s “irresistibly catchy…an album replete with nooks and crannies, light and shade”.

Barker has released music and toured as a solo artist as well as with various bands and collaborations, most notably her long association with Frank Turner, and has written for TV and film, including composing the soundtrack for Jake Gavin’s lauded debut feature ‘Hector’ starring Peter Mullan and Keith Allen.

Joshua “Flewnt” Eggington is an award winning, Proud Nyoongar Wongi rapper from Boorloo (Perth) Australia. With a strong family legacy rooted in activism. Flewnt uses his raw Hip Hop flow and modern-day musings as his platform to articulate a powerful, positive, and uplifting message for his people.

INKABEE is FLEWNT’s supremely talented son. After writing his first rap at age seven, 11 year old INKABEE exploded on to the Australian music scene in December 2022 with his debut track “Beat the Odds” and the follow up track Saved by the Bell.

After 2 releases in 2022, June embarked on her first national tour in support of Stella Donnelly’s record ‘Flood’ in early 2023, as well as releasing a slew of singles and her debut EP ‘Don’t Forget Your Bags’ with US label Father/Daughter records.

Bursting onto the scene with her debut single ‘Blak Britney’, Miss Kaninna has made her arrival well and truly known. The proud Yorta Yorta, Djadja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali woman has emerged as a voice of punk and power, as she’s taken the Australian live music landscape by storm.

Hailing from lutruwita/Tasmania, Miss Kaninna grew up on the shores of Bruny Island. From a young age she has been commanding stages across music and theatre, carrying forward the storytelling of her ancestors and fearlessly bringing them into the present. Her art is a powerful expression of her experiences as a young Blak woman in so-called Australia, drawing from the rich cultural heritage and paths laid before her by her Matriarchs. Her grandmother, Rosalind Langford, was a famous painter and renowned activist who played a pivotal role in starting the Aboriginal Information Service (AIS) in the 70s, the first Aboriginal organisation in Tasmania.

Harnessing that same energy and captivating audiences with her ferocious charisma, ‘Blak Britney’ arrived in May to critical acclaim. An anti-establishment anthem written to amplify the voices of Blak women, the single landed full rotation and within a fortnight was the #1 most-played song on triple j.

Following its release, she won the triple j Unearthed competition to play at Treaty Day Out alongside Jess Mauboy, Thelma Plum and Yothu Yindi – an opportunity she took to display the expansive range of what she is capable of and delivering an electrifying performance with her live band in tow. The impact of her potent live energy spread and she was swiftly booked across the some of the country’s premier summer music festivals – the inaugural SXSW Sydney, Meredith Music Festival, Haydays Music & Arts Festival, Beyond the Valley, Wildlands, Sun Cycle and coveted spot on the national 2024 Laneway tour.

Solidifying her role as “one to watch”, she gave one of the most talked-about performances at this year’s Bigsound festival, shortly followed by the announcement of her nomination for “Best Song/Track” and “The Archie Roach Foundation Award for Emerging Talent” at the 2023 Music Victoria awards. Becky Sui Zhen Freeman is a Chinese-Malaysian Australian artist, musician and creative producer working across audio, visual and interactive mediums. She lives and works on unceded Wurundjeri land.

In her project Sui Zhen, loss is examined on multiple levels, from the death of loved ones to the societal tendency to disappear within the 1’s and 0’s of modern life’s tech-driven rush.

From the pastel dystopia of the Secretly Susan era’s music videos to Linda, a ghostly alter-ego in the Losing, Linda LP, Becky’s surreal and staged landscapes situate her unique take on pop within its own uncanny terrain.

Becky’s most recent release is a collaboration with Chinese-Australian guzheng player and composer Mindy Meng Wang 王萌. Extending on Becky’s exploration of loss, this project focuses on identity flux, transformation and life’s many cycles.

Becky is also a regular monthly host on NTS Radio and the Sound and Music Supervisor for Art Processors.

For SXSW 2024 Becky will present a long form piece called ‘Sleepless’ which was written between the death of her mother and the death of her first born son. Despite the weight it carries, it is a testament of emotional liberation and resilience in the face of life’s hardships.

The trippy bops of 21 year old artist/producer Sycco have seen her land on the pages of Vogue, NME, Billboard, Paper, Cool Hunting, Nylon, Paste, Ones To Watch, triple j, and amass +60 million streams (and counting). She sold out her debut national headline tour, landed #29 (‘Dribble’) and #46 (‘Ripple’) in the triple j Hottest 100, and performed for KCRW and triple j’s Like a Version.
